Peter Holst Henckel captures jazz in this year's poster

This year, renowned visual artist Peter Holst Henckel is behind Aarhus Jazz Festival’s art poster. In the poster, he has sought to capture the sound and mood of a piece of jazz music. In the beautiful and colorful motif, the tower of the City Hall quivers like the neck of a double bass, while the musician’s fingers strike notes on the bass tower in a firework display of movement and color. It’s summer, it’s jazz, and it’s Aarhus.

Peter Holst Henckel’s artistic practice takes place in a field between aesthetics, politics, and poetry, with his works often balancing between a simple, clear expression and a more complicated layer of implicit meaning. This is also the case in this year’s jazz poster. We can clearly see the town hall tower and a hand gripping the instrument, but there is also much more at stake.

Often, Peter Holst Henckel applies a sense of duality to his work. He often combines different elements that otherwise do not belong together. For example, photos from war reports and motifs from the animal and plant kingdom, as he did with his butterfly images in the World of Butterflies project.

Peter Holst Henckel originally graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts back in 1992, and since then he has also taught at the Jutland Art Academy here in Aarhus. He has held numerous exhibitions both in Denmark and abroad and is represented in a large number of public and private collections. Among others, he is in the collections of the National Gallery of Denmark, ARoS, Heart, and Arken.

Remember the poster signing on Saturday 8 July at 15.00 at Salling Rooftop!
