Japan Now! at Hotel Carmel. With the mini festival Japan Now!, Aarhus Jazz Festival moves into the new venue Hotel Carmen in order to celebrate Aarhus as European Culture Capital and the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan. Makiko Hirabyashi Trio, a living testimony to international collaboration, will be the first to perform. Later that night, Julie Kjær, GOAT, and Turtle Yama take the stage. Makiko Hirabayashi Trio's shows have been described as 'a deeply integrated, incredibly vivid trio ensemble, where Hirabayashi's piano, Hovman's bass, and Mazur's drums perform as equals.' The trio creates a special soundscape that varies from transparent and delicate to colourful and unruly. Their music is inspired by elements of jazz, classical music, Nordic tone language, and the Far East. Makiko Hirabayahsi was born in Tokyo, grew up in Japan and Hong Kong, studied in the USA, and has lived in Denmark since 1990. She has been an active musician on the jazz and world music scene, and has never been held back by alleged genre limitations. In 2001, she formed her own trio with bass player Klavs Hovman and percussionist / drummer Marilyn Mazur. Since the trio's criticially acclaimed debut album Makiko was released in 2016, they have toured Germany, Japan, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Egypt, and Malaysia. The trio has released three CDs on the label Enja. Their second album Hide And Seek (2009) won a Jazz Audio Disk Award and a Jazz Melody award for the title track in Jazz Critique Magazine Japan. Marilyn Mazur has recently recieved the Danish Musician's Union's live award 2017 for her long, versatile, and unique contribution as a musician in Denmark and abroad. She has performed with a tonne of great acts such as John Tchicai, Pierre Dørge, Miles Davis, and Wayne Shorter.

We would like to thank EU Japan Fest, Toyota-Fonden and Augustinus Fonden for their support for Japan Now! ”With support from DJBFA – Composer and Songwriters Production Pool and Kodas Cultural Funds”.
