Musical journeys with open ends. Just like the plant that grows under clear starry skies, listeners better prepare for long journeys with open ends. The foundation often consists of groove like in West African music but Maria Dybbores compositions are also influenced by modern classics. In between the rush of ostinatos, you will also find melancholic, melodic themes as found in Nordic folk music, freely interpreted as is common in experimental jazz. Cactus is almost a double trio, with two basses and two saxophones. This mirror harmony makes it ideal to mirror, turn, twist, and challenge different themes. Their soundscape represents romantic imaginations of open stretches, mirages, and the dangerous sharp spikes of the cactus. Maria Dybbroe is a young saxophonist and composer who has played in and led many different acts in the more experimental parts of the Copenhagen jazz scene. She is a part of the bands KØS, Unity, IINN, EDB, and Coriolis, and has played with artists such as Laura Toxværd, Jesper Løvdal, Torben Snekkestad, Lotte Anker, T.S. Høegh, and with Kresten Osgood og Indianerne, and Doom Orchestra. Cactus is Maria Dybbroe's newest project with some of the most promising contemporary musicians on the Aarhus jazz scene, who are known from I Just Came From The Moon, who won the Young Jazz competition in 2016, and Narcosatanicos.
