A kaleidoscopic musical experience inspired by Africa

It is an overwhelming experience when the 13-man band AddisAbabaBand fills the room with a hybrid groove of Ethio jazz and afrobeat, spiced a solid dose of funk and cosmic jazz.

Since 2018, the band has played a slew of concerts in all possible and impossible places with a repertoire that has been explored and expanded.

Their music is written in unison and unfolds like a red-hot bastard of everything from free jazz to psychedelic rock, West Coast funk, and traditional afro grooves.

Over time, the band has built a  solid reputation that has gotten them gigs at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, this year's Roskilde Festival, and a sold-out Bispejazz Tent at Aarhus Jazz Festival for the last few years. The band has also toured Ghana and The Netherlands.

A sharp and tight brass section is in the middle of the soundscape alongside a powerful rhythm section and several percussionists. Add some surging organ sounds, cosmic flutes, and suggestive violin notes, and you have a band that truly known how to create a kaleidoscopic musical experience. They have been greatly inspired by African music icons such as Mulatu Astatke, Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor, and Hailu Mergi himself, who performs on the same night.
