Karel Keldermans (carillon)

The town hall bells mark the 30-year anniversary of Aarhus Jazz Festival

After the recently completed renovation, one can once again hear the bells at the top of Aarhus Town Hall's tower.

In addition to - automatically - sounding every fifteen minutes and playing Morten Bøup's old spring ballad 'In Vernalis temporis' at 12.00 noon and 6.00 pm, the bell is regularly used for concerts by the town hall's carillon player Peter Langberg.

For the occasion of the Aarhus Jazz Festival’s 30th anniversary, Peter Langberg has included a jazz performance in the 40-minute programme for the concert on this Thursday afternoon. The music has been chosen in collaboration with the famous American carillon player Karel Keldermans, who is in town for the jazz week and plays Thursday's concert at the town hall bells.

The programme includes three jazz compositions: Second Waltz from Dimitri Shostakovich’ Jazz Suite, arranged by Frank Stejn. In addition, It Is Not Necessarily So (from Porgy and Bess), and Strike up the Band, both written by George Gershwin and arranged by Karel Keldermans.

Before and after the jazz performance, Karel Keldermans plays three classical compositions.

Karel Keldermans is among the best carillon players in North America and has been at the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri since 2000. In 2012, he retired from the full-time job at the Springfield Park District in Springfield, Illinois, where he also led the famous and prestigious International Carillon Festival for 36 years.

Karel Keldermans has given carillon concerts throughout the world over the past 40 years. He has released six solo albums as well as an album of carillon and guitar duets with Belgian guitarist Wim Brioen.

Karel Keldermans graduated from the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen in Belgium and completed subsequent studies at the Dutch Carillon School in Amersfoort. In addition, he holds a master's degree in carillon from the University of Illinois. His music is played in Europe, North America and Australia.
The concert can be heard from Rådhusparken or from the square in front of Musikhuset, near the city hall tower, where the traffic noise is limited.
