“Tjalve’s writing is intelligent and consistently interesting with rich colours and textures but there’s an engaging spikiness about the music too that seems to draw its inspiration from contemporary American jazz developments.”

(The Jazz Mann).

"Tjalve's accessible but knotty playing pulls in every listener".

(Alyn Shipton).

An Aarhus jazz legend opens Aarhus Jazz Festival as part of a new duo

Jens Klüver, former bandleader and artistic director of Klüvers Big Band for 35 years, now known as Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, is once again active as a musician and regularly performs with his own bands and as a guest conductor and soloist in big bands all over Denmark.

For more than 30 years, Jens Klüver has created jazz experiences at Aarhus Jazz Festival, including by establishing the popular concert series in Ridehuset, 'Ridehuset Swings', which among today's most important events during the festival.

Jens Klüver lists three requirements for a festive night: jazz with swing, good food, and good red wine.

Additionally, he has a knack for professional, up-and-coming musicians, such as Esben Tjalve, who moved to Aarhus after 16 years in London.

Esben Tjalve is a jazz pianist and composer. He earned a bachelor's degree at the Royal Academy of Music in 2014 and later a master's in composition from The Guildhall School of Music. During his London years, he composed music for the BBC, Universal, and EMI, and was active on the English jazz scene with bands such as Henrik Jensen Followed by Thirteen, James Allsopp, Rory Simmons (Jamie Cullum) and singer such as Cecilia Stalin and Kristina Train (singer on Herbie Hancock's Imagine project).

In 2017, Esben Tjalve took to the studio with his band Red Kite with musicians from different European countries. the CD was released right before the 2017 jazz festival and received the following praises:

“Tjalve’s writing is intelligent and consistently interesting with rich colours and textures but there’s an engaging spikiness about the music too that seems to draw its inspiration from contemporary American jazz developments.”

(The Jazz Mann).

"Tjalve's accessible but knotty playing pulls in every listener".

(Alyn Shipton).
