Mindekoncert for Butch Lacy (DK)

Butch Lacy – frigjort, allestedsnærværende, syngende i vinden

”Butch Lacy favner utrolig bredt.

Butch Lacy - free, omnipresent, and singing in the wind

As a pianist, composer, teacher, and philosopher, Butch Lacy has inspired and influenced the world around him for his entire life. He passed away in April 2018 but lives on through the music and in the spirit of everyone who knew him.

Butch Lacy was born in Virginia, USA in 1947. As a 12-year-old, he was already a bandleader and accompanied renowned jazz stars such as Sarah Vaughan, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, and Putte Wickman for a number of years.

He came to Denmark in 1982 as an arranger and composer for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's Big Band. This led him to Klüvers Big Band, where he composed an extensive piece of music that was performed at the 800-year anniversary of Aarhus Cathedral, which also featured the choir of Den Jyske Opera.

From 1994 to 2002, he worked as a lecturer at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and took the initiative to form The Very Big Band, consisting of classical and rhythmic students.

From 2002, he continued as a temporary teacher at the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus/Aalborg.

'Butch Lacy has an incredible range. He knows his standards, symphony music, and has a feel for gospel and soul. He can make the piano grow into an entire symphony. His resume outshines anyone. He is unique.'

Those were the words of Jes Halding, chairman of the Aarhus jazz society, during a speech when Butch Lacy became the 35th recipient of Gaffelprisen award in February 2015.

On this afternoon, a number of different artists pay tribute to Butch Lacy with music and spoken word, and everyone is welcome.
