Aarhus, along with the Central Denmark Region, is the European Capital of Culture 2017. This will be marked at the 29th Aarhus Jazz Festival with special events such as the European festival 12 Points for up-and-coming musicians and Japan Now!, which focuses on contemporary jazz and Danish-Japanese musical collaboration.

A total of 350 concerts in 41 venues emphasise the jazz festival’s outreach. As always, there will be something for every taste.

Among the great international stars visiting Aarhus, look forward to Jamie Cullum with Aarhus Jazz Orchestra and Madeleine Peyroux at Musikhuset Aarhus, and Mike Stern/Randy Brecker Band at Train. True to tradition, Ridehuset Swings for four days with afternoon shows, Big Band Youth Camp Final, and a South African theme with South African Big Band Nights and the outdoor food market South African Market Place.

This year, Aarhus Jazz Festival introduces a new theme about Jazz history in Aarhus throughout the last century where important places, individuals and band will be digitally documented. In 2017, we will focus on the period 1919-1949. The Bispejazz tent will host a concert series with Aarhusjazzens Bagmænd (Movers of Aarhus jazz). Our goal is to tell all the old stories while remaining fixed on new developments and trends.

Community is still a big part of the festival and there will be music on squares and cafés, and in venues, museums and churches. Late Night Jazz Jam takes place every day of the week, where people meet to play late-night music. We once again present New Directions where jazz and classical music meet. There will also be Children’s Jazz at Dokk1 and Bispetorvet.

Eleven new venues have been added, including in Frederiksbjerg, making for an even bigger celebration.

All the wonderful musicians, venues, and concert organizers will make the whole city buzz with music and life during the jazz week. So dive into the program and see for yourself.

Most daytime concerts and many evening concerts are free.

The program can be found here.
