The best of Japanese jazz

18/6/2017 | Forfatter: Aarhus Jazz Festival

With the music event Japan Now!, Aarhus Jazz Festival showcases Japanese music for occasion of European Capital of Culture 2017 and to mark 150 years of Danish-Japanese diplomatic relations. The events take place Saturday 15 July.

Audiences will be treated to special shows with the weird and spirited Japanese brass band Mitamurakandadan?, who will perform the opening gig in the Bispejazz tent, followed by street parades throughout the city. The band plays brass music full of joy and optimism, and their repertoire spans broadly from classic brass band to modern pop classics.

The newly opened jazz venue Hotel Carmen hosts an afternoon and evening concert program with exciting Japanese quality music and Danish-Japanese collaborations.

There are Danish contributions to the critically acclaimed Makiko Hirabayashi Trio feat. Marilyn Mazur, who create a special soundscape stretching from the transparent to the colourful and unruly. The Danish saxophonist Julie Kjær has assembled a brandnew trio with Japanese Noritaka Tanaka and Daysuke Takaoka on drums and tuba.

The Japanese band GOAT are in a league of their own with unique, kaleidoscopic compositions interwoven with repetitive beats mixed with rock, minimalism, and hints of jazz and electronic music. The night ends with club vibes and thumping electronic beats, and improvisations by the two adventurous female musicians of the duo Turtle Yama from Osaka.

Japan Now! is financially supported by EU Japan Fest and Toyota-Fonden.
