Jazz that moves freely between familiar and experimental keys. The German saxophonist Benjamin Himpel visits this year's jazz festival and celebrates his first record release in a duo constellation with the pianist Simon Eskildsen. Benjamin Himpel performs with impressive, harmonious excess and is extremely responsive and melodious. His mastery of the saxophone makes his playing style playful, light, fluent, and attentive. These attributes really shine through in the duo format, as there is plenty of room for his talent to flourish. Simon Eskildsen has acquired a versatile and composed playing style through a long line of different musical projects. He is both solidly in tune with the great jazz pianists with a healthy dose of swing but also inspired by his work with African music, classic fugues, and freely improvised bits. His encounter with Himpel leaves no door unopened, and the music can freely move between familiar and experimental keys. Their music is a mix of Himpel's and Eskildsen's compositions mixed with standards, and an odd Danish classic here and there. The record 3rd Room was released in April, and Himpel / Eskildsen Duo are hot after a long spring release tour in Germany. Benjamin Himpel will also be performing in other constellations throughout the festival, including alongside the singer Karmen Roivasepp and as a feature with AddisAbabBand.
