Young big band talents led by award-winning composer and arranger. Aarhus Jazz Festival 2017 presents the unique opportunity to experience the pinnacle of Danish youth big bands with up-and-coming talents from the Aarhus-based Jysk Talent Big Band. Kathrine Windfeld blew critics and audiences away with her big band album AIRCRAFT, which won a Danish Music Award in 2016 in the category New Danish Jazz Artist of the Year. The album was also nominated for Record of the Year and Jazz Composer of the Year. She has recently released her second big band album Latency in May 2017 on Stunt Records. Kathrine Windfeld has performed with world stars such as Mike Stern (USA) and Gilad Hekselman (Israel), and her big band was selected to perform a showcase at Europe's biggest jazz exhibition Jazzahead in Germany. Kathrine Windfeld's vital compositions, which range from expressive to lyrical, often reveal her fascination with Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, and Brandford Marsalis, among others. Nonetheless, she has managed to add her own personal touch to the big band genre with hard-swinging ensembles, rhythmical twists, and grooves with strong attitudes that shift between elegant ballads and free-sounding structures. Since 2012, Jysk Talent Big Band has been a catalyst for young, talented jazz musicians in the Aarhus area. The band was founded by Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, led by trombonist and arranger Nikolai Bøgelund and saxophonist and composer Michael Bladt. Today, the orchestra has grown into a unique youth big band on the Danish jazz scene under the leadership of drummer John Riddell. John Riddell took his first big band steps in Jysk Talent Big Band and is now a popular drummer with Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. Jysk Talent Big Band is led in collaboration with Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, Royal Academy of Music Aarhus / Aalborg and Aarhus School of Music. Guest conductor Kathrine Windfeld will be performing some of her arrangements at the concert.
