Watch jazz in the cinema

Towards the end of Aarhus Jazz Festival 2018, you can nurse you Sunday hangover with jazz movies in Øst for Paradis. The cinema devotes the entire day, Sunday 22 July, to jazz experiences on the big screen, presenting musical, visual, and different jazz films.

In collaboration with Copenhagen Film Festival, we will be showing a line of select jazz-themed documentary and short films during the afternoon.

Japanese Boy (Japan, 2016 – 5 min.)
An animated music video with icon Takeshi Nakatsuka's Japanese Boy.

Bamako Play (Denmark, 2017 – 25 min.)
Director Anders Skovbjerg Jepsen has followed the Danish sextet The Kultimangoes on part of their musical journey through recording in Burkino Faso and Mali. The movie lives and breathes for the intensity that arises in the encounter between Western and African music.

Duane Eubanks (USA, 2016 – 3 min.)
Directing debut of Kal Toth, featuring Duane Eubanks speaking about jazz, trumpet, and legends Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, and Johnny Coles.

Tyler (USA, 2016 - 7 min.)
Fiction. A woman is challenged in life and spirit as her body turns into pure gold.

Soma & Lil (Cyprus / Denmark, 2017 – 11 min.)
Cypriotic documentary recorded in Denmark about the work and unique music of an improv cello duo based in Denmark.

Say What!! A General Proposal (USA, 2016 – 6 min.)
An animated, humouristic, and thoughtful portrait of the trials of a jazz musician with the advances of older women and other feminine challenges.

Alight (Sverige, 2017 – 37 min.)
Documentary by Emils Nils Nylander on four different African musicians, who all long for recognition and finding a place for their journey through life - creating music and being the voice of the mute. The film was recorded in Malawi and Rwanda.
