The jazz festival opens with brass in the streets

After last year's success, the jazz festival's festive and funky New Orleans band is back with a parade through the city's streets followed by a concert at the newly decorated Bispetorvet at the official opening of the 31st Aarhus Jazz Festival.

There will also be opening speeches on the stage, which this year is not a tent, but Zirkus Nemo's beautiful and atmospheric outdoor scene.

The band encourages the audience to dust off their umbrellas and dance along with New Orleans classics such as Funky Liza, Bourbon Street Parade, When My Dreamboat Comes Home and many more.

In recent years, a new generation of New Orleans fan musicians has appeared in Aarhus. A group of these – young and old musicians, and those who have not decided what they are yet, but love New Orleans music and the syncopated rhythms – make up this street parade led by trumpeter Scott Westh.

The instrumentation is the classic format of two trumpets, two trombones, a sousaphone, and battery, in this case, a small and big drum.

This year's jazz festival marks the 100-year anniversary of jazz's entry into Aarhus in 1919 with a concert by Aage Rasmussen's band at Hotel Terminus, Ryesgade 3. Therefore, it is only fitting that the opening gets a touch of historical jazz music played by today's musicians.
