An evening of world music

The accordion virtuoso Emir Bosnjak opens the night with a half hour in the accordion universe.

Emir Bosnjak is a trained accordion soloist from the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus and works both with classical and rhythmic music on a high level.

On the debut concert, Jyllands-Posten wrote:

"Bosnjak will undoubtedly have great and perhaps innovative significance for the spread of his instrument on several fronts."

He is known for his distinctive lyrical expression, which comes from a mixture of Balkan music, French musette and Argentine tango nuevo with a stroke of the Nordic sound and an elegant virtuosity with nerve and passion.

He has collaborated with Aarhus Symfoniorkester, Århus Sinfonietta, Klüvers Big Band and Randers Kammerorkester and has been featured on several recordings.

Emir Bosnjak is affiliated with Aarhus Theater, Aalborg Theater, and Filuren as a composer and musician and has recently participated in the preparation of Astor Piazzolla's tango opera María de Buenos Aires at the Danish National Opera.

In the duo Dawda Jobarteh & Stefan Pasborg, two charismatic and masterful musicians from two different musical cultures meet. A melting pot of styles that blends into an interaction based on a mutual love for strong rhythmic parts, beautiful melodies and pure energy.

Jazz Special wrote on the release of their debut album DUO:

''Not since Jimi Hendrix and Sonny Sharrock have I heard anything like this! There is nothing to argue about. These two gentlemen from the Gambia and Denmark, respectively, strike a chord filled with power ... a well-arranged suite with a fantastic dialogue between the two soul brothers."

Dawda Jobarteh grew up in Ghana in a Griot family, where he played percussion from the age of seven and as 12-year-old played concerts with his uncle and cousins.

20 years ago, he settled in Denmark and started playing the kora. Today he travels around the globe as a professional musician.

On his latest CD I Met Her By The River, Jobarteh shows his technical and phenomenal mastery of the kora, yet which always remains second to his beautiful voice.

There are beautiful moments of immersion on the release that never become oversentimental or superficial.

Stefan Pasborg is one of the most personal, versatile and sought-after European drummers and bandleaders of today. He has toured in more than 30 different countries, has received a myriad of awards, has played with the best names of jazz and has been the initiator of bands such as Ibrahim Electric, Pasborg's Odessa XL, Firebirds, Free Moby Dick, Toxicum, Delirium and others.

Stefan Pasborg also plays with Carsten Dahl Trinity on Monday 15 July at Helsingør Theater.

The concert is part of the event series 100 years of jazz in Aarhus and is supported by the William Demant Foundation, the CAC Foundation and the Nordea Foundation "We support good living".
