Tribute to a legendary drummer

2019 is the year when the drum icon Art Blakey would have been 100 years old. For this occasion, Kristin Korb has gathered an international all-star group as a tribute to Art Blakey and his band Jazz Messenger.

Blakey was known for pushing his musicians to the limit and encouraging them to write their own music and play it with passion and dynamism. The young lions that were part of Blakey's group later became some of the biggest names in jazz.

Kristin Korb's Blakey Project began when Gladsaxe Jazz Festival contacted Kristin to play a special concert for their festival in 2018, promising to record the project.

Kristin listened to her CDs with Jazz Messenger and found that there was a great lack of bass solos, vocal features and a general lack of women in jazz. It was, therefore, an obvious idea to let Jazz Messenger's music become the foundation for the Gladsaxe project.

New arrangments were created with respect for the tradition without copying or reproducing what Blakey's musicians did to perfection.

Pianist Søren Møller has made some of the new arrangements for the concert. In addition, there are a number of other surprises - also of a vocal nature - that we can look forward to.

The concert is part of the event series 100 years of jazz in Aarhus and is supported by the William Demant Foundation, the CAC Foundation and the Nordea Foundation "We support good living".
