Young German big band jazz

Landes Jugend Jazz Orchestra Hessen – known today as Kicks & Sticks – is considered one of Europe's best youth big bands and will be performing at both Bispetorvet and Ridehuset during the festival.

The band was formed in 1985 by current leader and conductor Wolfgang Diefenbach with the aim of establishing an orchestra where young musicians could receive professional big band training at a high level.

Over the years, more than 2,000 young musicians have been involved with the orchestra, whose concept is based on three pillars: workshops with well-known jazz musicians as teachers, well-prepared concerts and professional recording sessions.

The orchestra plays standards by Duke Ellington and Count Basie, compositions created for the orchestra, and music rooted in Brazilian and Cuban music as well as the New York Latin scene.

Kicks & Sticks has toured most of the world, including Australia, South Korea, Vietnam and South America.

Since 1990, the band has received solid support from Hessische Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst.

Kicks & Sticks also plays at Ridehuset Saturday, July 20th at 5 pm.
