Music that sounds and swings like it's supposed to

DR Big Band invites you to a concert in Ridehuset with the award-winning young harmonica virtuoso Mathias Heise in front.

Mathias Heise has been named young jazz artist of the year and will be unveiling a both new and familiar repertoire at this concert, featuring his critically-acclaimed album with DR Big Band.

"This is music that sounds and swings like it's supposed to!", wrote Berlingske, and Politiken gave them five hearts with the words "miraculously harmonic play" when Mathias Heise and DR Big Band's album The Beast was released last year.

Finally, the Aarhus audience can look forward to experiencing the unique collaboration between Heise and DR Big Band live at Ridehuset.

There are not many young musicians who display their talent as clearly as the 25-year-old Danish harpist and pianist Mathias Heise. Not only has he been named chromatic harp champion of the world, he has also been showered by honorable music prizes – from the Crown Prince Couple's Stjernedryspris to awards such as new jazz star of the year and Ben Webster Prisen.

Mathias Heise has been referred to as a worthy heir to the grand old man of the chromatic harp, the American Toots Thielemans. Although he, along with DR Big Band, will also pay tributes to Toots on this evening at Ridehuset, the audience may first and foremost look forward to a concert with Mathias Heise's own catchy compositions, where jazz's harmonies and improvisation meet the hard-hitting rhythms of rock and funk music in a bubbly, colorful and euphoric expression.

The collaboration between DR Big Band and Mathias Heise is a strong musical cocktail with deep roots. Through its key position on the Danish jazz scene, DR Big Band has played a major role in Mathias Heise's career.

For this occasion, DR Big Band will be conducted by Jesper Riis.
