Group improv over thoroughly composed works

Zero Kestra is Cesar Joaniquet's new band, which started with an idea of creating a new, smaller ensemble, where there is room to explore and develop the integration of group improvisation into newly written and composed musical works.

Cesar Joaniquet is a composer and saxophonist and is active on the European jazz scene. Most recently, in 2018, he wrote two larger pieces for Aarhus Jazz Orchestra: one with choir and church organ, which was premiered in Aarhus Cathedral, and a piece titled Sketches of Barcelona, which was played during a tour of Denmark at Vinterjazz 2018 in collaboration with the Catalan multi-instrumentalist and jazz superstar Jorge Rossy (Brad Mehldau Trio and The Bloom Daddies et al.).

With Zero Kestra, Cesar Joaniquet presents a new repertoire in a smaller format: four wind instruments plus a rhythm group.

With titles like Nothing is a word and Zero, he digs deeper into his interest in circulating around the spiritual, just like concepts such as infinity and silence will appear in the music.
