Back to the jazz and blues roots

On this afternoon, Café Gemmestedet hosts a Roots Jam with Emil Otto and Morten Rune at the helm.

We will not be digging up the usual standards on this day, but move closer to the jazz roots at the start of the 20th century, represented by Jelly Roll Morton and, especially, Louis Armstrong. Mix in some delta blues and feel good-soul, and you have a spicy gumbo.

The young Aarhus-based pianist and vocalist Emil Otto has just returned from an apprenticeship with the world-renowned pianist Carl Sonny Leyland and finds his inspiration in old pianists such as Scott Joplin, Fats Waller and Professor Longhair.

For the last couple of years, Morten Rune has established a strong presence on the Aarhus and Danish blues scene as a singer and guitarist. With raw and present vocals, and a very old school approach to the guitar, he is guaranteed dynamic and engaging.

Along with his renowned brother, Marc (Big Creek Slim), Morten Rune already worked with the blues from early childhood and took it for what it was: muddy and heavy river water from the Mississippi Delta.

The Jam hosts first play a short set after which the jam is open to everyone.
