Classical music and saxophones

For Sommerjazz 2020, Aarhus Jazz Festival presents a concert series with Solo, Duo, Trio, and Quartet in the beautiful interior of Aarhus Cathedral.

For this last concert, we will meet Jutlandia Saxophone Quartet, which is a classic saxophone quartet. Because of Covid-19, the jazz festival had to cancel the concert series New Tracks this year, which is a collaboration with the classical music environment - but with this concert, you can still find classical music as part of the summer jazz program.

Jutlandia Saxophone Quartet will play a mixed repertoire of music by, among others, J.S. Bach and new Danish music by Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen and his exciting piece Mellem Linjerne. In addition, there will be virtuosic tango music by Argentine tango master Astor Piazzolla.

The quartet has had a broad profile throughout their careers. First, they took on the original repertoire for saxophone quartets, then major classical pience, and now contemporary music.

Classical music and saxophone do not normally go hand in hand. This is not really a big mystery as the saxophone was invented in the 1840s (where the jazz scene was so-so), and partly because the saxophone has become increasingly prominent on the classical scene in recent years.

This development has been a major driver of Jutlandia Saxophone Quartet. Since the ensemble was formed in 1996, it has presented the classic saxophone at approximately 300 concerts in churches, music associations, festivals, and tours of England, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and Argentina. Even the Danish royal family had invited the quartet; once at the traditional autumn concert at Fredensborg Castle and once as musical accompanists at the Expo in Japan.

Look forward to a beautiful and atmospheric concert in Aarhus Cathedral.

The entire concert series Solo, Duo, Trio, and Quartet is as follows:

13 / 7 4.00 pm Solo: Kasper Tranberg + Christian Windfeld, 14 / 7 4.00 pm Duo: Jesper Thilo / Kresten Osgood, 15 / 7 4.00 pm Trio: Come Sunday - Orgeljazz i kirken, 16 / 7 14.00 pm Quartet: Jutlandia Saxophone Quartet.

All concerts in Aarhus Cathedral are conducted according to the regulations of the authorities and with a distance between the audience.
