A Terrific Night of Jazz

The Hess / Vuust / Vuust Trio has slowly become the house band at Tir na NÓg during the jazz festival – and this year is no exception.

This evening will feature a very special jam session where the three talented musicians will play off each other by drawing on well-known jazz classics, their own compositions, and improvisation.

Nikolaj Hess is one of the most frequently used pianists in both Danish and international contexts. Recent releases include Nikolaj Hess Micro Chapters, Nikolaj Hess Rhapsody, and Music for Mum and Dad with 3xHess, for which he won the DMA 2014 Jazz Release of the Year, as well as music featured in Lars Von Trier's film Melancholia.

He has also been active recording and playing shows with Nikolaj Hess Trio, Hessismore, Hess / Skou, and Caroline Henderson. Over the years, he has played with artists such as Lee Konitz, Benny Golson, Etta Cameron, and many others.

Peter Vuust is a professor at Aarhus University and the Royal Academy of Music and head of the Center for Music in the Brain. He has played on more than 100 records and with international jazz stars such as Tim Hagans, Mal Waldron, Ted Curson, and Jukkis Uotila. He is known for his groovy and responsive backing and extremely melodic soloing, and as a composer and bassist he has released 7 albums; most recently the CD Further to Fly (2022) with the family band 5xVuust.

Mikkel Vuust is one of the country's most talented young drummers. Despite his young age, he has played with names such as Jakob Fisher, Uffe Steen, Henrik Gunde, and Sinne Eeg. He is currently studying at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and has just released the album Further To Fly with 5 x Vuust.
