A Clash of Young Jazz Talents

Three young hotshots of the European experimental music scene meet for the first time at Aarhus Jazz Festival. Expect an intersection of detail-oriented structures, whimsical improvisations, and big grins.

Viktoria Holde Søndergaard is a young vibraphonist and composer, as well as the leader of the band Baryl, which made waves with the debut album Already Monday? in 2021. Baryl won the JazzDanmark Jazz Competition in 2022. Later that year, Viktoria won the Tivoli Jazz Prize and the Aarhus Jazz Talent Prize 2022 in December. Her compassionate, fearless, mature, and personal playing and musicality were among the reasons for her win. 

Jeff Wagner is a guitarist who, despite his young age, has studied and performed in Europe and the United States, written music for film and theater, and worked with numerous artists. He has studied with some of the best modern jazz guitarists, including Julian Lage, Lage Lund, and Jakob Bro, as well as with some of the most exciting composers, including Signe Lykke and Rune Rebne.

Patrycja Wybrańczyk on drums is busy on the European jazz and avant-garde scene. She has been nominated for the Fryderyk Award in the Jazz Phonographic Debut category, has been a finalist at the international competition B-Jazz Festival in Belgium, and won several other awards, including the Special Award at the Krokus Jazz Festival. Her inspiration comes mainly from avant-garde, improvised classical music, Polish folk, and broadly defined Scandinavian jazz.

The concert is presented by the music collective OKTOsounds in connection with their two-day residency at A-huset, Department of (X) July 11-12.
