A Shared Affection for Countless Musical Traditions

A Fo connects the world in an energetic and unique universe where African rhythms from Mali and Senegal mix with Nordic folk tunes, Siberian throat singing, dance, and improvised music.

The punchy name means "play!" or "speak!" in the Mandinka language, and that's exactly what the band does. Together they play, dance, and sing their way through a shared their shared affection for countless musical traditions.

This evening, the band has invited two improvisational equilibrists, Carolyn Goodwin and Nana Pi Aabo-Kim, to join them for a must-see collaboration, and we look forward to inviting you on this extraordinary concert journey.

Nana Pi Aabo-Kim is a Copenhagen-based saxophonist, composer, and conductor who mainly works on the experimental jazz scene. She has developed her own unique vocabulary on the saxophone using objects and extended techniques. In addition to playing the saxophone, she is known for conducting improvisations with her musical sign language Extemporize, for which she received the 2020 P8 Jazz Award for "Firebrand of the Year"

Her releases have been critically acclaimed with reviews such as "If anyone is wondering what exciting free jazz in 2022 is, just open your ears and your other senses to Tactical Maybe - they have certainly delivered something that could be the answer to that very question."
Tor Hammerø.

In 2021, her quintet Nezelhorns was nominated for Jazz Release of the Year at DMA Jazz for their release Sentiment (Barefoot Records, 2021).

Carolyn Goodwin is an Irish-born clarinet, bass clarinet, alto, and soprano saxophonist based in Copenhagen. As a performer and creative artist, her work crosses into many genres, including opera, theater, alt-pop, and jazz, as well as contemporary and improvised music.

Carolyn finds inspiration in traditional music from her native Ireland as well as other cultures. In 2016, she conducted field studies in Bamako, Mali, researching the balafon playing tradition of the Mandinka people. In 2018 she was artist-in-residence at Laboratorio Artistico de San Agustin in Cuba, and in February 2019 at Mandagsklubben 5E in Copenhagen.
