One can hear the influence of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk in South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim's music, both as composer and instrumentalist, as well as the ever-present African element. Abdullah Ibrahim has performed and recorded with a number of historical jazz giants, like John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Max Roach, as well as his own large ensembles. His music is readily recognizable and very personal, drawing on childhood musical experiences with church singing, South African folk music - and jazz.
