Lionel Loueke (gui)

World-class guitarist with his own tunes and original Hancock interpretations

Lionel Loueke is a unique musician with his very own take on guitar jazz. In 2001, he was selected by Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, and Wayne Shorter to study at the Monk Institute. In 2005, Herbie Hancock invited him to join his regular band, where he has been playing ever since.

Lionel Loueke is from Benin in West Africa and uses his musical background as a strength in his approach to jazz. He experiments with the sound of the guitar and has an insane ability to simultaneously play guitar and sing in different meters.

In 2020, he released the solo album HH, where he overs tracks from Herbie Hancock's repertoire. It is both a tribute to the champion as well as a completely personal take on both lesser-known songs and big hits like Watermelon Man and Cantaloupe Island.

Currently, Lionel Loueke is touring with songs from this album, but this evening will also feature his own compositions.

Bazarjazz is very proud to present this world star at Gellerup Art Factory.
