Intense and present jazz
Christina Dahl is one of the most respected saxophonists in Denmark. She is a bandleader and composes music for small and large ensembles, and has performed with numerous groups.
She is known for her unique sound and lyrical renditions that pull on the heartstrings. Christina Dahl masters the ability to maintain the intensity and intimacy in the music and her style varies from intimate and subtle to explosive.
In 2019, Christina Dahl Kvartet released the CD Quintesse, which garnered reviews like:
The music - which is exclusively written by Christina Dahl herself – is dynamic, multi-faceted, sensuous, yet still lyrically clear and breezy. Christina Dahl's personal contribution comes off as authentic and warm. The three sidemen's contributions as adequate and proportional.
Ivan Rod, Gaffa.
Soft toned and breathy tenor saxist Christina Dahl creates Givenchy impressions.
George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly.
The quartet's musicians perform as supporting soloists in a shared playful, free, and original interaction. The quartet performs with a sense of freedom in an airy, playful ensemble that delivers a present and diverse musical expression. Christina Dahl's compositions contain meaningful stories about the richness and colorfulness of live.
Christina Dahl received the Bent Jærdig-award in 2010, the honorary award of DJBFA in 2011, and the Walther Klæbel stipend in 2012. She also received the Ben Webster Award back in 1994.
The concert is part of the series The Iconic Saxophone at Aarhus Jazz Festival 2021.
The concert series pays tribute to an instrument that has been an important part of jazz music since the beginning, having fostered legendary musicians such as Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Yusef Lateef, and Charlie Parker.
The Iconic Saxophone is supported by The Knud Højgaard Foundation, CAC Foundation, STIBOFONDEN, Aarhus Stifttidende Foundation, Gangsted Foundation, Danish Arts Foundation, and Aarhus Municipality.
