The living Aarhus jazz museum swing at Atlas
An amazing female vocal, an excellent singer (who also plays tuba), an unmatched conductor an arranger, five trumpets, five trombones, five saxophones, a pianist, a guitarist, a drummer, and a double bass player. A sound engineer, a stagehand, and a photographer.
That's the recipe for Sankt Pauls Band.
The band was formed in 2002, when the legendary saxophonist and entertainer H.C. Vartenberg got the idea to start a big band.
Old friends and bandmates from Peder Pedersens Big Band quickly signed up and made Sankt Pauls Band come to life.
They are driven by their shared passion for the classic big band repertoire with detours to newer compositions. Even Lennon/McCartney and Mick Jagger are on the repertoire ... . And the level of ambition is high.
With Peder Pedersen as bandleader and arranger, there's guaranteed to be some serious swing music.
When H.C. Vartenberg was awarded Jazzselskabet Aarhus' Gaffelpris-award in 2015, Jes Halding said:
Vartenberg has created a big band of considerable musical standard and a notable group of musicians that include several Gaffelpris recipients.
The band contains five Gaffelpris recipients, including one Ben Webster honorary award recipient.
Sankt Pauls Band has performed and played during Aarhus Festuge, Aarhus Jazz Festival, Randers Festuge, Odder Festuge, Musikhuset Aarhus, and Djurslands Jazzklub. The band has also performed on the Faroe Islands, at Tunø Festival, and at Østersø Jazz Festival on Bornholm.
