The sound of gospel and modern fusion jazz

Clapper mixes the sound of gospel music from the American West Coast with modern fusion jazz. A brand new addition to the unique Aarhus-based musicians with zeal for renewal of the jazz genre.

However, the four musicians are not new to the stage. Several of them have played together for many years, including in the band Abekejser. The musicians are also known from groups such as Hvalfugl, Karmen Rõivassepp Quartet, and Bangin ’Bülow’s Nice Jazz Quartet.

Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny, said Frank Zappa in 1973. At a time when jazz was mixing with other genres in hopes of further development.

Now, almost 50 years later, the jazz scene is more diverse than ever before. Today's jazz smells of everything from rock, hip hop, folk music, techno, and pop to a mix of it all. Is it even jazz anymore?

For the four good friends in Clapper, it does not matter so much what one calls it. The only thing that matters is that it sounds cool!

- For us, it is not important to live up to any genre ideal, says guitarist Jeppe Lavsen.

- We meet and play and improvise over some musical ideas that we think will sound cool. We have been playing together for so many years that we quickly find our way onto some common ground when we play. And then it's just about sorting and picking out the coolest ideas.

- We have long shared the ambition to make some music in that genre. Maybe the question is why we did not start earlier, says pianist Malthe Jepsen.

Clapper is planning their first releases in the fall of 2021.
