Jazz for the Virtuosic Harmonica

The stage is set for a magnificent jazz afternoon when Mathias Heise takes the stage with Pelle von Bülow and Peter Vuust.

Mathias Heise is a virtuoso on his harmonica and an exceptional musical talent. He started playing the harmonica at the age of eight and became fascinated by the instrument, which has followed him through thick and thin ever since. It is rare for a young Danish musician to be named world champion on his instrument, but in 2013, at just 20 years old, Mathias Heise became world champion in chromatic harmonica. In 2012 he formed Mathias Heise Quadrillion, which has managed to create a fresh, unique, and highly personal contemporary sound by combining the harmonies and improvisation of jazz with the hard-hitting rhythms of rock and funk music. He also performed with world-renowned composer and pianist Bent Fabricius-Bjerre for his last public concerts in 2018 and 2019. Mathias has released three solo albums.

Pelle von Bülow has already left his mark as an established and respected guitarist on the Danish jazz scene. His style is inspired by iconic guitarists such as Wes Montgomery and George Bensen. It also includes elements of blues music, for which he holds a special fondness. In 2020, he received the Tivoli Jazz Prize, and previously the Bent Jædig Memorial Scholarship. In addition, he has played with artists such as Jesper Thilo, Rodney Green, Bernt Rosengren, Christina von Bülow, and many more.

Peter Vuust is a professor at Aarhus University and the Royal Academy of Music, head of the Center for Music in the Brain, and is also one of the country's busiest sidemen. He has been featured on more than 100 albums and with international jazz stars such as Tim Hagans, Mal Waldron, Ted Curson, Jukkis Uotila, and many more. He is known for his groovy and responsive backing and extremely melodic soloing. Peter has also been nominated for a DMA for his CD September Song.
