During the Aarhus Jazz Festival 2019, 100 years of jazz music in Aarhus are celebrated with a large-scale concert program at Helsingør Theater, Den Gamle By, where you can hear international jazz stars, interpretations of the jazz standard repertoire as well as examples of contemporary jazz music.

All concerts begin at 20.00 with door sale from 19:00.

The program opens strongly 12/7 with the American guitar icon Bill Frisell's trio. The experienced guitarist and composer has several critically acclaimed albums behind him, most recently the solo album Music IS from 2018. Frisell's trio also features bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston.

The day after 13/7 you can experience the classic recorder virtuoso Michala Petri interacting with jazz percussionist Marilyn Mazur and the Brazilian guitarist and composer Daniel Murray. This, together with the Århus Sinfoniettas concert 17/7, is part of New Directions 2019 - where jazz meets classical music.

On Sunday 14/7 we present beautiful and breathtaking jazz and world music with Emir Bosnjak on accordion, followed by the duo Dawda Jobarteh & Stefan Pasborg. This evening features Balkan music, French musette, Argentine tango, Ghanaian kora and a melting pot of styles that meet in a musical fireworks display.

Carsten Dahl Trinity plays 15/7 and the trio is the essence of interplay through improvisations, Nordic tones and famous American standards. Besides Dahl, who is a true master on the piano the trio consists of Niels Davidsen (bass) and Stefan Pasborg (drums).

On Tuesday 16/7 Canadian singer Denzal Sinclaire & Graig Earle Trio will be honoring Nat King Cole and all the other great jazz vocalists. Sinclaire is known in the jazz world as one of the most elegant and fervent live interpreters of jazz standards in the world today. For the past four years, he has often performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, has previously released three award-nominated and award-winning records at Verve / Universal Records USA - and received the "Male Jazz Vocalist of the Year" award in the Jazz Report Magazine for four consecutive years. It will be a unique concert experience.

The last concert on the program in Helsingør Theater is with I Think You’re Awesome & Friends. The band has made their mark on the Danish jazz scene in recent years with their special brand of indie jazz. With bassist and composer Jens Mikkel Madsen in the front, the band draws inspiration from everything from playful, African rhythms to Nordic folk tones, European improvisation and American songwriting tradition. The band is 10 years old in 2019 and has for the occasion composed a special concert with guest soloists: Taïga String Quartet & Thomas Madsen.

The event series 100 years of jazz in Aarhus is supported by the William Demant Foundation, the CAC Fonden and the Nordea Foundation "We support good living".
