It has been a fantastic week with exciting and swinging music, good atmosphere and lots of focus on jazz history. The 31st edition of Aarhus Jazz Festival was characterized by great events from a record number of organizers with concerts all over the city. There was jazz both inside and outside with superb musicians and happy festival guests.

The History of Jazz In Aarhus through 100 years from 1919-2019, this has been the main theme of this year's jazz festival. It was celebrated at a number of concerts and events. There were the concerts in the atmospheric Helsingør Theater, Den Gamle By, with eg. Bill Frisell Trio, Carsten Dahl Trinity, Michala Petri / Marilyn Mazur / Daniel Murray and local band I Think You’re Awesome. There were also tribute concerts for jazz-greats such as Dexter Gordon, Monica Zetterlund and Art Blakey. The latter would also be able to celebrate his 100th birthday in 2019 and was therefore to be found on this year's festival poster by Finn Nygaard. There were also stories about the jazz history in the city in general at www.aarhusjazzhistorie.dk, mini-exhibitions at Dokk1 and The Danish Poster Museum, jazz historical city walks and four Talking Jazz events with retrospective, exciting stories and quirky anecdotes from the city's history with jazz music.

There were big stars and strong international impressions during this year's festival and many special musical experiences for the audiences, which is emphasized by great reviews: six stars for Marcus Miller at Musikhuset Aarhus and 5 stars for Jakob Buchanan feat. Chris Speed and Simon Toldam in Aarhus Cathedral. Aarhus Jazz Festival held again this year New Directions - where jazz and classical meet - in collaboration with AUT and Århus Sinfonietta, and successful children's jazz events both at Bispetorvet and Dokk1.

The event Ridehuset Swinger was held as always 4 days during the festival with concerts, dining and Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, that played Latin rhythms along with invited Cuban guests under the theme Cuban Big Band Nights. But it was not only here the jazz party thrived. Outside there was music on Telefontorvet, Klostertorvet and Bispejazz on Bispetorvet, where the square had been opened up, so many happy people could enjoy the music under the open sky. To this can be added the concerts on the Salling Rooftop and Spot Royal scene by the river - and on the whole there were jazz concerts all over the city.

All in all, it has been a fantastic week where Aarhus has been buzzing with music and life - and there has been positive feedback from both musicians, organizers and guests from home and abroad.

Aarhus Jazz Festival wishes to thank the audience, musicians, organizers, venues, volunteers and sponsors for contributing to the jazz party.
