The jazz environment in Aarhus and East Jutland is in these years a very creative period, with the environment flourishing and many young jazz musicians, organizers and others works with exciting and innovative projects. That is why the Aarhus Jazz Festival in 2018 instituted an "Aarhus Jazz Talent award", which in addition to honor and recognition should give the recipient an economic hand and an even better opportunity to be noticed both nationally and internationally. This years prize consists of DKK 10.000 as well as a concert at the ATLAS venue.
The jury had 13 good candidates to choose from, but eventually the choice was Simon Eskildsen, who will be the second recipient of the new jazz prize Aarhus Jazz Talent. The award is given to a person or initiative who has made an extraordinary mark and has shown a special talent in his work for jazz music in Aarhus.
The jurys motivation reads: “Simon Eskildsen receives the award for being a gifted musician, illustrator and animator - a versatile endowment in music and images. He knows a lot and does a lot. Simon is one of the foremost, younger pianists in Denmark with several acclaimed releases behind him and has contributed to the Aarhus jazz scene for several years. Although he currently resides in Copenhagen, his work is still largely associated with Aarhus. Simon is a member of the Aarhus groups Simon Eskildsen Trio, AddisAbabaBand, Morten Haugshøj Group, Karmen Rõivassepp Quartet, OrgelDuo, Karsten Aaholm Déjà Vu and others, where he very convincingly contributes to the respective expressions in different stylistic directions. Simon has largely shaped the visual image of the music community in Aarhus by providing illustrations for numerous record covers and posters and creating music videos for a number of the citys artists and venues. He has also played an important role in HeadQuarters programming during the Aarhus Jazz Festival for several years. Simon Eskildsen is aarhus jazz in sound and image and to the full deserves the prize as Aarhus Jazz Talent 2019 ”.
