Jazzens historie i Aarhus – Udstilling (DK)

Aarhus' jazzhistorie

Take a closer look at the city's jazz history at this mini exhibition

Learn more about the concert venues and musicians, and hear exciting and fun anecdotes from Aarhus City's long history with jazz music. You can even present your own best personal jazz story.

Much has happened since Anton Bjelke, a well-known musician and later music dealer, in 1923 proclaimed that he "would rather be carried on a stretcher from Vennelyst to Sct. Paul's Square" than put his lips on "the beast ", i.e., a saxophone that had recently come to town.

Three weeks later, by the way, he himself had bought just that... a saxophone.

Aarhus got local jazz bands and jazz clubs, and visits by big foreign jazz stars. Jazz history is also filled with enthusiasts who in their own way have ensured that the music has been able to live in the city.

Jazz came to Aarhus from America just after the First World War. The beginning of the new form of music in the city is characterized by new inspirations, strong opinions both for and against – and the organization of the first local jazz bands and jazz clubs.

Apart from the first chord not having been recorded, the Aarhus jazz history book is in order.

100 years ago, in 1919, Aage Rasmussen presented the first non-local jazz band at Hotel Terminus in Ryesgade 3, and from the 1920s, jazz was gradually introduced in Aarhus through a number of important events. In 1923, the first saxophone, 1927 the first band with a "completely local crew", 1934 the first association, 1935 the first prominent foreign concert act. This was how jazz took its first tiny steps onto the Aarhus music scene.

In 2017, the Aarhus Jazz Festival project Jazz History in Aarhus began, which, in collaboration with Carsten Ljungkvist, author of the book of the same name, describes the many places, people and bands that have had an impact on the jazz scene over the years.

The material is presented on the website www.aarhusjazzhistorie.dk – and on the app Discover Aarhus you can follow guided tours around the most important jazz historical points throughout the city.

During this year's jazz festival, one can experience some concerts that are related to jazz history, and one can hear about jazz history at the Talking Jazz events at Teaterkatten, participate in jazz historical city walks, see the poster exhibition at the Plakatmuseet in Den Gamle By - and then experience the jazz-historical mini-show at Dokk1 every day during the jazz festival in the time period 10.00 am to 7.00 pm.

Location: Rampen, Dokk1.
