Evening jazz with Mathias Heise, Nikolaj Hess, Peter Vuust, and Mikkel Vuust

Look forward to an evening in the company of some of the country's best jazz musicians at Tir na nÓg.

Mathias Heise is a virtuoso on the harmonica and an exceptional musical talent. He started playing the harmonica when he was eight and fell in love with the instrument, which has been with him through thick and thin ever since. It's rare for a young Danish musician to be crowned world champion on his instrument, but in 2013, at age 20, Mathias Heise became world champion on the chromatic harmonica. In 2012 he formed Mathias Heise Quadrillion, who together have managed to create a different, unique, and very personal contemporary expression, combining jazz harmonies and improvisation with the hard-hitting rhythms of rock and funk music. At his last public concerts in 2018 and 2019, he also played with the world-renowned composer and pianist Bent Fabricius-Bjerre. Mathias has released three solo albums.

Nikolaj Hess is one of the most sought-after pianists in both Danish and international contexts. He recently released Nikolaj Hess Micro ChaptersNikolaj Hess Rhapsody, won the DMA 2014 Jazz Release of the Year Award with 3xHess for the album Music for Mum and Dad, and was featured in Lars Von Trier's film Melancholia. He has also been very active recording and performing with the Nikolaj Hess Trio, Hessismore, Hess / Skou, and Caroline Henderson, and has played with Lee Konitz, Benny Golson, Etta Cameron, and many others;

Bassist Peter Vuust is a professor at Aarhus University and the Royal Academy of Music, head of the Center for Music in the Brain, and one of the country's most popular sidemen. He has been featured on more than 100 records and with international jazz stars such as Tim Hagans, Mal Waldron, Ted Curson, Jukkis Uotila, and many more. Known for his groovy and responsive backing and extremely melodic solos,  he has released 7 albums as a composer and bassist, most recently the CD Further to Fly with 5 x Vuust;

Mikkel Vuust is one of Denmark's most promising drummers. Despite his young age, he has played with the likes of Jakob Fisher, Uffe Steen, Henrik Gunde, and Sinne Eeg. He currently studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and released the album Further To Fly with 5 x Vuust in 2022.
