Through the unique combination of the traditional instrument pipa with drum sets and Korean percussion instruments, Wooli Duo creates a fascinating and unique musical expression that blends a traditional East Asian soundscape with improvisation and contemporary music.
Together, the musicians have created original compositions based on traditional rhythms and melodies from both Korea and Taiwan, curated from the repertoire of their traditional instruments. The result is music that can be described as highly rhythmic, energetic, and sonorous.
Michael Lee Sørenmo is a drummer from Trondheim with a master's degree in improvisation and world music from the Gothenburg Academy of Music. In Wooli Duo, he plays both drums and the Korean drums Janggu and Buk. The latter he acquired during recent study trips to South Korea, where he studied several renowned teachers.
Fan-Qi Wu is a well-known pipa player in Taiwan. While studying the pipa at university with renowned teachers in Taiwan, she developed a unique technique and sound on her instrument. The pipa is a traditional stringed instrument with a history dating back thousands of years, which has become a prominent musical instrument in several East Asian countries, especially in Taiwan, China, Japan, and South Korea. Fan-Qi also holds a master's degree in improvisation and world music from the Gothenburg Academy of Music.
