Autocratic Marches Turned Upside Down

With her latest music, Estonian saxophonist and composer Maria Faust tackles the political, where propagandistic marches from dictatorial regimes are lovingly and jazzy treated, turned upside down, and transformed into new music with a positive message. "Marches Rewound & Rewritten" is a sequel to the award-winning choral work "Mass Of Mary", composed for victims of domestic violence - which we presented at the Aarhus Jazz Festival a few years ago.

Maria Faust, an Estonian composer and saxophonist living in Copenhagen, grew up in the Soviet Union. Here, marches as part of the propaganda for the communist system were the soundtrack of her life. Early on, like so many other residents of the Soviet Union, she had to read the world between the lines, music was used as a hiding place, and art was often the only place where freedom and truth could be found. By taking the repetitive element found in propaganda music and turning it upside down, slowing it down, rewinding it, and zooming in, Faust creates a new map for the march, exposing it, shaking it, and setting it free again.

The music is for winds and percussion, with the snare drum as the focal point. The orchestra consists of some of Denmark's best jazz musicians, so you can expect a strong and well-played concert in a special setting at Museum KØN.

Before the concert, it will be possible to hear a little about the music and the composer in a conversation with Maria Faust at 1 pm, at the same location. A ticket to KØN includes admission to both the concert at 2 pm and the artist talk at 1 pm. Ticket price: 125 DKK. Under 30 years / pensioners: DKK 105. Children under 18 years: free.

The concert is part of the concert series "New Horizons" during the Aarhus Jazz Festival, where new jazz music is presented in special venues.
