Learn More About the Composer and the Music
Before the concert "Marches Rewound & Rewritten", we host composer and saxophonist Maria Faust to talk about music and her life as a composer. She will be in conversation with journalist and administrative director of the Jazz Festival, Marie Norman Nyeng.
In her latest works, the Estonian saxophonist and composer deals with political circumstances where propaganda parades from dictatorial regimes are given a loving jazzy treatment, turned upside down, and transformed into new music with a positive message. Maria Faust grew up in the Soviet Union. As part of the propaganda for the communist system, marches were the soundtrack of her life. "Marches Rewound & Rewritten" is a sequel to the award-winning choral work "Mass Of Mary", composed for victims of domestic violence - which we presented at the Aarhus Jazz Festival a few years ago.
The artist talk at 1 pm and the concert with Maria Faust Sacrum Facere at 2 pm will both take place at KØN Museum and are included with admission to the museum.
Maria Faust is one of the most prominent names in the Danish experimental scene and has received numerous awards for her work, including five DMAs, an Estonian Music Award and an Honorary Award from the songwriters' trade organization DJBFA. Her work and unique musical language as a composer and improviser is easily recognizable, yet difficult to describe due to her inventiveness and wide range of influences.
