The show will feature a concert and an artist talk, where the guest artist will be interviewed by journalist and administrative manager of the Jazz Festival, Marie Norman Nyeng. Come and enjoy a unique musical experience - and learn more about Paal-Nilssen Love and his life with music.
Paal Nilssen-Love is one of Norway's most influential and hard-working jazz drummers and has long since established himself on the international jazz scene. Pat Metheny even announced him as Norway's next president after performing with him at the Molde Jazz Festival in 2001.
Nilssen-Love was born on Christmas Eve 1974 in Molde. When his parents moved to Stavanger to run Jazzloftet (Stavanger Jazzclub), one of the most important jazz clubs in Northern Europe at the time, he was exposed to jazz through the music of Art Blakey, Tony Oxley, David Murray, Billy Bang, John Stevens, and others, which became a natural part of his upbringing. At the age of 14, he started playing jazz, free jazz, and improvised music in the bands of Frode Gjerstad and Didrik Ingvaldsen.
Through his work in several bands and ensembles and collaborations with some of the giants of free jazz, he has been at the forefront of the raw and energetic Scandinavian free jazz scene. Since the mid-90s, Nilssen-Love has appeared on more than 260 albums - 60 on his label. He has been a central part of bands such as Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Atomic, The Thing, The Quintet, Scorch Trio, and Frode Gjerstad Trio and has played all over the world with musicians such as Ken Vandermark, Akira Sakata, Arto Lindsay, Dave Rempis, David Murray Yayohi, David Murray Yahide.
This year's guest artist at Aarhus Jazz Festival can be experienced at many different concerts during the festival. See more in the printed program or here at jazzfest.dk
