Astor Piazzolla's tango nuevo in new clothes
The Tango Orchestra consists of the country's leading experts in Astor Piazzolla's music. Since its foundation in 1989, the band has cultivated its passion for tango nuevo and has toured extensively in Denmark, Europe, Asia, and Argentina.
The Tango Orchestra is not looking to recreate Piazzolla's works as they were originally created – that would be pointless. Rather, the band's vision is to update Piazzolla's work for our time and part of the world - to dress Piazzolla's unique and compelling compositions in new clothes, drawing on the playful improvisation of jazz, the infectious anarchism of rock, and the cool clarity of Nordic music.
Through its extensive work over more than 30 years, the Tango Orchestra has made Argentine music, and especially Piazzolla's music, its own – despite the great distance in geography and culture.
An evening with the Tango Orchestra is an evening of great emotions, new insights, and pleasant musical togetherness. The Tango Orchestra invites its audience along for the ride. Everyone should feel welcome in the ensemble's universe. The Tango Orchestra takes its audience on a fascinating journey through a deeply enchanting and highly varied landscape.
Astor Piazzolla was trained as a musician and arranger by the greatest tango luminaries of Buenos Aires in the 1930s and 1940s, not least the most famous of them all, Anibal Troilo. After a life-changing study period with legendary composition teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris, Piazzolla returned to his homeland with a clear vision to reform Argentine tango.
Tango would move from the dance halls into the concert halls and be recognised as an artistic expression on a par with European classical music, from which it borrows much of its melodic and harmonic material. Until his death in 1992, Piazzolla made a growing impact at home and abroad. He left a legacy whose strength and importance cannot be overestimated. His music is now a permanent fixture in the repertoire of most classical ensembles.
