Mahanthappa/Møller/Mogensen Quintet (IN/US/DK)
On this evening, Indian/American top saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa meets our Danish counterpart Lars Møller supported by an extremely competent rhythm group.
Mahanthappa and Møller have two important things in common: understanding of Indian music and deep roots in American jazz. Both have been on several study trips to India.
The master John Coltrane shared their fascination with Indian music combined with jazz and that legacy carries on excellently in this star-studded orchestra.
Mahanthappa is one of the most prominent alto saxophonists. He has won numerous awards and has been named alto saxophonist of the year for seven of the last eight years in the DownBeat International Critics' poll.
Lars Møller is, in addition to being an excellent saxophonist, known as a composer and bandleader - among others of Aarhus Jazz Orchestra.
Mahanthappa and Mogensen's musical community started at the Berklee College of Music, where they met when they were young. Since then, they have toured together in the orchestra Real People and have released a CD of the same name.
The Pakistani/American guitarist Rez Abbassi is quite undeservedly a relatively blank page in Denmark. He has been a permanent partner with Mahanthappa for the past 20 years and has, among other things, recorded with the pianist Vijay Iyer.
In the 1990s, the rhythm group Davidsen/Mogensen played a part in pioneering orchestras such as When Granny Sleeps and Copenhagen Art Ensemble and has since delivered a creative and solid musical effort in numerous contexts.
