Groundbreaking and Experimental Dance Jazz
Mass is a band in close contact with its groundbreaking nature. The band's three young musicians from Hylke and Lemvig strive to break new ground in music. They experiment and put jazz in a modern context, especially through their composition and harmony.
On a compositional level, the music looks for open spaces between the formal joints where intimacy and intention flourish. Sonically, the double bass, saxophone, and intimate, sizzling drums come together in an equal and energetic communication.
In 2022, the band entered the scene with their debut EP shitpigeon. The release cemented the group's place on the experimental scene in Denmark and was nominated for DMA Jazz in the "New Act of the Year" category.
In general, Mass explores music that is first and foremost uncompromising and honest. The band sees the hard and raw as being just as strong and beautiful as the seemingly nice. In their uncompromising compositions, Mass distances itself from being too polished. This search for honest ideas is expressed in strong and wild movements as well as in the quiet and fragile.
The expression is both basic and intellectually powerful. This contradiction is not the only one to be found in the group's DNA. Experiencing Mass can be hard and soft. The music is purposeful and explorative. The compositions are stubborn and at the same time reach out in winding, uncertain meanders. It's hard to describe the sound of Mass without the opposite being just as true. The music is shapeless, multicolored, elastic, and strong. Hence the name.
